Job Title: Stevedoring Rigger/Gear Technician
Reports To: Stevedore Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-Time
Pay Rate:  $16-20 DOE
Position Summary
The Stevedoring Rigger/Gear Technician is responsible for inspecting, selecting, maintaining, and assembling the heavy-duty lifting gear used in loading and unloading cargo vessels. This role ensures that all rigging equipment — including wire ropes, synthetic slings, shackles, spreader beams, and hooks — meets maritime safety standards and OSHA Longshoring regulations before any lift takes place.
Key Responsibilities

• Inspect wire ropes, synthetic slings, shackles, and spreader beams for wear, corrosion, deformation, or damage prior to every shift and lift.
• Calculate load weight, center of gravity, and appropriate Working Load Limit (WLL) to select correct rigging configurations.
• Assemble and attach specialized lifting gear (container spreaders, cargo nets, heavy-lift slings) to cranes or ship derricks.
• Select and apply appropriate rigging techniques (choker hitch, basket hitch, bridle hitch) based on cargo type and shape.
• Maintain accurate inspection logs and tag/remove defective gear from service.
• Respond to and report any near-misses, equipment failures, or safety incidents.

Required Qualifications

• Must have TWIC Card

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with heavy-lift/project cargo rigging.
• Crane signal person certification.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work at heights.
• Comfort operating in outdoor, marine-terminal environments in all weather conditions.
• Ability to stand, bend, climb, and work with hand tools for extended periods.
• Must pass pre-employment and periodic fit-for-duty and drug/alcohol screenings.

Work Environment
Active marine cargo terminal with exposure to heavy machinery, cranes, and vessel operations. Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required based on vessel schedules.
